CAPMT Piano Auditions

provide an opportunity for piano students of all ages, including college students and adults, to perform solo and accompanied music at the Chapter level.

Piano Auditions are designed to encourage and motivate students through the evaluation of prepared solo and accompanied literature chosen from the CAPMT Piano Auditions Repertoire List (revised August 2017). Students are rated 15 (5 being the best), with those receiving a 5-, 5, or 5+ being invited (but not required) to perform at the CAPMT Northern Festival or CAPMT Southern Festival.

CAPMT Piano Auditions Repertoire List (revised August 2017)

  • Instructions for PRINTING Repertoire List:
    • Depending on your Printer, you may need to scale to 90% or 95% OR select“Fit” or“Shrink oversized pages.”
  • Collections in BLUE are new to the Repertoire List.
  • Collections in PURPLE are titles that have been updated and/orcorrected.
    • NO titles have been removed.

Levels, Performance Time Limits, & Application Fees
(Revised August 2017)

  • Levels 1 through 10
  • Performance Time Limits (NEW: Revised Time Limits)
    • Levels 1–3: 10 minutes
    • Levels 4–6: 12 minutes
    • Levels 7–10: 15 minutes

  • Application Fees
    • Levels 1–3: $30
    • Levels 4–6: $35
    • Levels 7–10: $40
      • Application Fees will only be accepted ONLINE via PayPal or credit card payment.
      • Online Application Deadline: October 5, 2017, 11:59 PM PST

  • Application Fees Surcharge for students of Non-CAPMT Members
    • $20

Rules & Guidelines

  • The website will be open to applications September 10, 2017 through October 5, 2017.
  • Please read the currentCAPMT Student Program Guidelines.
    Deviation from these rules may result in disqualification.


Piano Auditions Repertoire

  • Determine repertoire choices from theCAPMT Piano Auditions Repertoire List (revised August 2017).
  • Piano Auditions Repertoire is divided into Levels 1 through 10.
  • The student will perform THREE works from the same Level:
    • Two SOLO pieces:
      • One of the two solo pieces must be from theCAPMT Piano Auditions Repertoire List (revised August 2017): Solo Music.
      • The other solo piece does not need to be from the List.
      • Students should select only one movement of a Sonatina or Sonata and may select one part of a set of variations, suite, or prelude & fugue.
      • Solo pieces must be memorized.
    • One ACCOMPANIED piece:
      • Accompanied piece must be from theCAPMT Piano Auditions Repertoire List (revised August 2017): Accompanied Music.
      • The student plays the primo part.
      • Applicants must provide their own accompanist.
        • It is recommended that the teacher not accompany his/her own student in the Piano Auditions.
        • Whenever possible, another student, a parent, or other accompanist should play the secondo part.
      • Students should select only one movement of a concerto or multi-movement work.
  • Performers will be stopped if the maximum allotted time is reached; this will not affect the outcome of the competition.
  • There can be no repertoire changes at any point in the auditions.
  • Teachers must assist in the running of the program on the day of the Piano Auditions at the Chapter level.


Audition Guidelines: Chapter Level

  • Students MUST provide their own accompanist at the Chapter level.
  • Auditions at the Chapter level are in recital or evaluation format and held between November 1, 2017 and December 15, 2017 as determined by local chairs.
  • For a student who receives a performance rating of 5-, 5, or 5+, the adjudicator will select the first choice (and second choice if the first choice is fewer than two minutes in length) for CAPMT Northern Festival or CAPMT Southern Festival performance.
  • All students will receive a participation certificate.
  • All students who receive a performance rating of 5-, 5, or 5+ will be invited to perform at the CAPMT Northern Festival or CAPMT Southern Festival.
  • After Piano Auditions results are available, eligible students (rating of 5-, 5, 5+) need to apply forparticipation in the CAPMT Northern Festival or CAPMT Southern Festival online.
    • There is NO ADDITIONAL registration fee for participation in the CAPMT Northern Festival or CAPMT Southern Festival.
  • Written comments from the judges will be provided.


FestivalGuidelines: Northern & Southern

  • Students MUST provide their own accompanist at the CAPMT Northern Festival and CAPMT Southern Festival.
  • The website will be open to Festival applications December 5, 2017 through January 5, 2018.
  • Festivals are in recital format:
    • NORTH:February 3, 2018 (SAT) at Peace Lutheran Church
    • SOUTH: February 17, 2018 (SAT) at Los Angeles Harbor College
  • Students ARE REQUIRED to stay for the entire duration of their assigned Festival recital hour.
  • Students who perform in the CAPMT Northern Festival or CAPMT Southern Festival will receive medals.
