CAPMT Contemporary Music Competition

is for highly motivated students and highlights the music of contemporary composers. It is open to piano, string, wind, brass, and voice students through age 26.

The Contemporary Music Competition fosters advanced competition skills through heavier repertory demands. Preliminary auditions are held at the District level, but hosted by a Chapter.District winners will compete in the Contemporary Music Competition State Finals onApril 6, 2019 (SAT) at California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley.

  • Although certificates and checks can be mailed, trophies will NOT be shipped. However, a proxy may accept the trophy.
  • Each 1st-place Contemporary Music Competition State Winner will be invited to perform at the CAPMT Student Programs State Winners’ Concert, held at the CAPMT State Conference in October 2019 (TENTATIVE).
  • NEW REPERTOIRE RULE for 2018–2019: Students will perform 1–2 memorized works (NO CONCERTI and NO WORKS FOR SOLO INSTRUMENT & ORCHESTRA) written by a living composer(s) or a composer(s) with a death date on or after January 1, 1945.

Rules & Guidelines

  • The website will be open to applications November 20, 2018 through December 20, 2018.
  • Please read the currentCAPMT Student Program Guidelines.
    Deviation from these rules may result in disqualification.
  • Previous 1st-Place Contemporary Music Competition STATE FINALS winners may NOT compete again in the same Category in succeeding competitions. (For example, a Category A State Finals Winners may NOT enter Category A again.)
    • Students are allowed to compete in the same Category of the District-Level Contemporary Music Competition more than once—as long as they meet the age requirement—until they win 1st Place at the CAPMT Contemporary Music Competition State Finals.
  • Instrumentalists and singers may perform accompanied music; but must provide their own accompanist at both the Contemporary Music District Competition and at the Contemporary Music Competition State Finals.
    • Teachers may accompany their students at the District Competition.
    • Teachers may NOT accompany their students at the State Finals.


Contemporary Music Repertoire

  • NEW REPERTOIRE RULE for 2018–2019: Students will perform 1–2 memorized works (NO CONCERTI and NO WORKS WRITTEN FOR SOLO INSTRUMENT & ORCHESTRA) written by a living composer or a composer(s) with a death date on or after January 1, 1945.
    • Please keep time limits in mind when selecting repertoire.
    • Exceptions to the memorized work rule, such as performing music composed with non-traditional notation, must be cleared with the State Chair at least two weeks before the District competition date.
    • It is the responsibility of the teacher/student/parent to research and check the death date of the composer(s).
    • Pieces from “method books,” easier “teaching pieces,” or simplified arrangements are not acceptable.
    • Singers must include one selection in English and one in a language otherthan English if choosing to perform two works.
  • NEW REPERTOIRE RULE for 2018–2019:Students may NOT repeat repertoire in succeeding Contemporary Music Competitions if they were a 1st-Place winner at the CAPMT Contemporary Music Competition State Finals.
    • Students are allowed to repeat repertoire in the Contemporary Music Competition until they win 1st Place at the CAPMT Contemporary Music State Finals
  • Instrumentalists and singers may perform accompanied music; but must provide their own accompanist at both the Contemporary Music District Competition and at the Contemporary Music Competition State Finals.
    • Teachers may accompany their students at the District Competition
    • Teachers may NOT accompany their students at the State Finals.
  • Performers will be stopped if the maximum allotted time is reached; this will not affect the outcome of the competition.
  • There canbe no repertoire changes at any point in the competition.


Competition Guidelines: District Level

  • If applicable, students MUST provide their own accompanist at the Contemporary Music District Competition.
    • Teachers may accompany their students at the District Competition.
  • District Competitions are in recital format and held between January 15, 2019 and March 15, 2019 as determined by local chairs.
  • One student in each Categoryfrom each District may be selected to participate in the Contemporary Music Competition State Finals on April 6, 2019 (SAT) at California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley.
    • No ties are permitted, but alternates may be designated if their performance is of comparable quality to that of the winners.
  • Teachers of a student who is a District winner of both the Contemporary Music Competition and the Honors Competition must inform each State Chair immediately after receivingnotification of the District results.
  • Written comments from the judges will be provided.


Competition Guidelines: State Finals

  • If applicable, students MUST provide their own accompanist at the Contemporary Music Competition State Finals.
    • Teachers may NOT accompany their students at the State Finals.
  • The Contemporary Music Competition State Finals will be in a recital format:
    • April 6, 2019 (SAT) at California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley
  • Students will be given a specific performance time and willcheck in fifteen minutes beforehand.
    • Students who are late will be disqualified.
  • State Finals Judges will hear thestudent’s choice of repertoire first, and portions of the other two pieces, if the total performance time exceedsthe time limit.
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention may be awarded in each Category.
  • There will be an Awards Ceremony immediately following the Competition. All participants will receive an award certificate; 1st-place winners will receive a trophy and monetary prize.
