CAPMT Concerto Competition

is for highly motivated students and highlights the concerto repertoire. It is open to piano, string, wind, brass, and voice students through age 26.

The Concerto Competition offers a unique opportunity to compete with one movement of a concerto (with piano accompaniment). Preliminary regional auditions are held in the North and South.Regional winners will compete in the Concerto Competition State Finals onApril 6, 2019 (SAT) at California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley.

  • Although certificates and checks can be mailed, trophies will NOT be shipped. However, a proxy may accept the trophy.
  • Each 1st-place Concerto Competition State Winner will be invited to perform at the CAPMT Student Programs State Winners’ Concert, held at the CAPMT State Conference in October 2019 (TENTATIVE).

    • All Categories: $50
      • Application Fees will only be accepted ONLINE via PayPal or credit card payment.

Rules & Guidelines

  • The website will be open to applications November 20, 2018 through December 20, 2018.
  • Please read the currentCAPMT Student Program Guidelines.
    Deviation from these rules may result in disqualification.
  • Previous 1st-Place Concerto Competition STATE FINALS winners may NOT compete again in the same Category in succeeding competitions. (For example, a Category A State Finals Winners may NOT enter Category A again.)
    • Students are allowed to compete in the same Category of the Regional-Level Concerto Competition more than once—as long as they meet the age requirement—until they win 1st Place at the CAPMT Concerto Competition State Finals.
  • Students MUST provide their own accompanist at both the Concerto Regional Competition and at the Concerto Competition State Finals.
    • Teachers may accompany their students at the Regional Competition.
    • Teachers may NOT accompany their students at the State Finals.

Concerto Repertoire

  • Students will perform one memorized concerto movement (with cadenza if applicable) with a piano accompanist.
  • One-movement works are acceptable (e.g., Liszt’s Concerto No. 1 and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue). Attaca movements are allowed (e.g. 2nd and 3rd movements playedattaca).
  • NEW REPERTOIRE RULE for 2018–2019:Students may NOT repeat repertoire in succeeding Competitions if they were a 1st-Place winner at the CAPMT Concerto Competition State Finals.
    • Students are allowed to repeat repertoire in the Concerto Competition until they win 1st Place at the CAPMT Concerto Competition State Finals
  • Students MUST provide their own accompanist at both the ConcertoRegionalCompetition and at the Concerto Competition State Finals.
    • Teachers may accompany their students at the Regional Competition.
    • Teachers may NOT accompany their students at the State Finals.
  • Performers will be stopped if the maximum allotted time is reached; this will not affect the outcome of the competition.
  • There canbe no repertoire changes at any point in the competition.

Competition Guidelines: North Regional Level & South Regional Level

  • Students MUST provide their own accompanist at the Concerto Regional Competition.
    • Teachers may accompany their students at the Regional Competition.
  • Regional Competitions will be in a recital format:
    • NORTH: February 2, 2019 (SAT) at California State University, Stanislaus (Snider Recital Hall)
    • SOUTH: February 16, 2019 (SAT) at Los Angeles Harbor College (Music Building)
  • One student in each Categoryof each instrument type from each Region may be selected to participate in the Concerto Competition State Finals held onApril 6, 2019 (SAT) at California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley. For example, Category A may have a String Winner and a Voice Winner, and both Winners may participate in the State Finals.
    • No ties are permitted, but alternates may be designated if their performance is of comparable quality to that of the winners.
  • Written comments from thejudges will be provided.

Competition Guidelines: State Finals

  • Students MUST provide their own accompanist at the Concerto Competition State Finals.
    • CAPMT will provide a list of suitable accompanists.
    • Teachers may NOT accompany their students at the State Finals.
  • The Concerto Competition State Finals will be in a recital format:
    • April 6, 2019 (SAT) at California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley
  • Students will be given a specific performance time and willcheck in fifteen minutes beforehand.
    • Students who are late will be disqualified.
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention may be awarded in each Category.
  • There will be an Awards Ceremony immediately following the Competition. All participants will receive an award certificate; 1st-place winners will receive a trophy and monetary prize.
